Corey is celebrating new life this Easter, thanks to CityTeam supporters and volunteers.

“Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it?” — Luke 15:4

For years, Corey was the lost sheep Jesus speaks of with love and compassion . . .

  • He wasted more than a decade battling drug addiction.
  • By age 28, he had squandered more than a quarter of his life in prison.
  • When he wasn’t behind bars, he spent months hungry and homeless — forced to live in his car because he couldn’t hold a job.

THE CHANCE FOR A NEW START

But we know that Jesus delights in finding lost sheep — just like Corey — and introducing them to the family of God.

That’s how Corey ended up at CityTeam last year just before Easter, finally ready to experience genuine Resurrection Hope and take his first steps toward a new life . . .

“Without CityTeam, I would be sitting in prison right now. Or if I got out, I would probably go right back to the same old thing because that’s all I knew,” he says.

Once at CityTeam, Corey went from just surviving day to day alone on the streets to being a part of a loving family that offers comfort, support, and guidance toward the life he always imagined himself living. Corey now realizes he wasted years “trying to figure out what I was going to do next.”

“I feel human again.”

Corey reconnected with God, maintained his sobriety, and learned how to serve others coming off the streets as he worked in our kitchen. He has found new purpose in the simple, humble act of serving daily hot meals.

“I feel human again,” he says. “I was done being nothing more than a number in the system.” Even worse, he says, “I was done being someone who my family couldn’t trust and didn’t want to be around.”

Today, Corey has a full-time job and has gone back to school to study law — just two of the miracles he says he has experienced since coming to CityTeam.

DOING THE RIGHT THING

“Even when no one’s looking, doing the right thing still feels good,” he says. “I believe if you put your best foot forward and do good, then good will come out of it.”
