"A PLACE CALLED HOME"
“I feel safe here, and I haven’t been able to say that for so many years . . .”
“I saw drinking as the manly thing to do,” says Robert. Growing up, Robert had present, hardworking parents. But behind the consistency, harmful habits were taking root.
“I remember my father would bring me to the bar with him on the weekend after a long day of yard work,” says Robert. “At the time, I didn’t think anything bad about it. But something was planted in me as a child.”
After Robert’s parents bought a bar, the door to drugs and drinking flew open. Partying became a regular part of life. So when Robert’s parents divorced, he coped the only way he knew how . . .
“I would cover up my feelings with marijuana and alcohol. Eventually, hard drugs became my escape,” says Robert.
Relentless cycle
Robert tried over and over to get clean, going back and forth between rehab centers, jail, and the streets. “I would black out, and the next thing I know, I’d find myself in jail,” he says.
For years, Robert was caught in this relentless cycle. Anger and addiction controlled him, and he became what he never wanted to become.
“My dad was violent toward my mom, and I saw a lot of domestic violence growing up,” says Robert. “I told myself I never wanted to be like that . . .”
Robert reached a point where he couldn’t hold a job because of his drug use and was living out of his car. “It all caught up to me,” he says. When his car—containing everything he owned—got towed, Robert hit rock bottom.
I told God, “I’m finished. I can’t keep on doing this the rest of my life. I’m going to end up dead. I don’t want to die.” This turning point led him to CityTeam.
“I’m so glad my life was spared”
Robert describes the love and compassion at CityTeam as “feeling like home.”
“I feel safe here, and I haven’t been able to say that for so many years,” says Robert. “In the past, there was always alcohol in the fridge or a party going on. Now, I have structure.”
Robert found every resource he needed to restore what was lost to addiction and homelessness. But the restoration didn’t stop there. His son, Gabriel, joined Robert at CityTeam and found new life, too.
“I see a new light in my dad,” says Gabriel. “I love that we get to give back to the community together.”
Their father-son relationship has only grown stronger!
“I often think, Lord, I’m so glad my life was spared so many times. It’s a miracle I didn’t die out there in the sin I was living in. God healed me,” says Robert.
