‍“A LIFE-CHANGING CALL”

Jessica was running out off options, and didn’t know what else to do but buy bus tickets for herself and her two children, pack a bag, and leave. The terrified mother took a risk to escape domestic abuse.

“I was afraid for my life and my children’s lives,” says Jessica. “On top of it all, I was pregnant with twins.”

Thankfully, Jessica secured a hotel room through government assistance. But she had only so much time before she and her children would be on the streets. “I didn’t have anybody to call on,” she says.

A desperate search

Jessica’s search for housing kept hitting a dead end. So when someone told her about a program that could help her and her little ones get back on their feet, hope felt within reach. Jessica found transportation to the program and was relieved her family would finally have a safe place to rebuild.

But Jessica’s glimmer of hope was snuffed out when they arrived. She had been misinformed — the program didn’t take women and children.

“My kids and I were stuck standing out on the street with nowhere to go,” says Jessica.

A woman on staff graciously offered for Jessica to stay in her home for two days while Jessica figured out next steps. “I called every program possible,” she says. The next day, Jessica received what she calls a “life-changing” phone call. There was a place for her at CityTeam’s Turning Point — our transitional housing program.

“Walking through CityTeam’s doors was a sigh of relief,” Jessica says, “My life did a total 180 in a matter of months.”

Here, Jessica didn’t have to worry about everyday essentials. She always had three meals a day, school transportation for her kids, and baby essentials for her new twins. The stability made it possible for Jessica to focus on restoration — financial planning and saving money, self-esteem classes, and, above all, building her relationship with Jesus.

“I’ve become more confident. I’ve become more independent. And I’ve become more self-reliant,” says Jessica. “My relationship with God, my relationship with myself, and my relationship with my children are way better.”

A life-changing blessing

Today, Jessica is living in her own apartment and taking college classes online for real estate. “My children are happy and living their best life,” says Jessica.
