Kal was running himself into the ground. CityTeam helped him turn his life of shame into a life of serving others!

Kal’s life began spiraling downward when he used meth for the first time at age 13.

“It escalated fast. I dropped out of high school and turned into a street kid.”

Even when Kal and his girlfriend became teenage parents, he continued using drugs. The addiction followed him into their marriage.

While they had hopes of building a stable life, strained family relationships and Kal’s drug use created a shaky foundation. He sank deeper into addiction. After several warnings, his wife left with their two sons.

Kal became homeless.

BROKEN AND ASHAMED

After three years of scraping by on the streets, using drugs, and running with gangs, Kal had nothing left but the clothes on his back. Broken and homeless, he had but one option: move back home with his mom. “It was the hardest thing to show up at my mom’s front door with nothing,” says Kal.

With help from his mom, Kal began to rebuild. He was about to secure a job when the distraction of drugs returned. “My mom saw my personality and knew I was using again,” he says.

So, Kal packed a bag and left. Once again, he was homeless.

BLINDED BY ADDICTION

Kal wandered the streets looking for his next hit and his next meal. Breaking into cars for a place to sleep and dealing drugs was his everyday routine. “People can see that you have nothing to lose and you’re a homeless drug addict,” he says. “I felt embarrassed and ashamed.”

He was in a county jail when he realized his addiction was blinding him. He knew he had to get clean.

That’s when Kal heard about CityTeam.

SHAME TURNED TO SERVING

After years of heartache, Kal finally found hope. He says, “Without CityTeam, I would’ve been dead.”

With the help of CityTeam @ Work, Kal identified the barriers holding him back and began planning for a successful future.

CityTeam's restorative programs helped Kal with his goals to secure a job, become a better father, forgive himself, and forgive others. Every day, God is working in him. Through community outreach and serving meals to neighbors facing homelessness, Kal is learning the power of humility and giving back.

“Ever since I was 13, all I knew was how to do bad things,” Kal says. “CityTeam supporters are restoring lives, which is more than anyone can ask for. Thank you for changing me.”
