Jeremy thought he’d never escape the streets. This Easter, he’s celebrating new life!

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11 (Jeremy’s life verse)

Jeremy spent so many years on the streets — hanging out with gangs, doing drugs, running from the law — he felt all hope was gone. This is where I’m going to die, he had convinced himself.

But God had other plans for Jeremy. “When you’re as miserable as I was, you think that people don’t care about you. Now I know that people actually care, because of CityTeam. My life has been saved and I have CityTeam to thank for it.”

Downward Spiral

Jeremy’s heart wasn’t always filled with such gratitude. Growing up in an abusive home, he found gangs were the only ones who “really accepted me.”

He married his sweetheart, and they had three beautiful children together. But Jeremy still couldn’t escape the streets or drugs. His behavior became even more erratic when his dad died. “I lost my wife and the respect of my kids.”

Jeremy ended up behind bars. But he says, “I’ve never been so fortunate to go to jail.” While in jail, Jeremy remembers having a long conversation with God. “I asked Jesus to help me because I wanted my family back.” He says God’s reply was “try something harder.” What’s harder than being on the streets? Jeremy remembers thinking. “Transformation,” he sensed God telling him.

That’s how Jeremy ended up at CityTeam. “I was ready to give up and surrender,” he says.

A Way Out

Jeremy received everything he needed, including help setting boundaries to chart a new course for his life and restore broken family relationships. His turnaround inspires his wife and kids. Jeremy earned his GED and is well on his way to getting his food manager’s card. He’s also in transitional housing, an important first step in reestablishing self-sufficiency.

Jeremy has discovered his heart to help others get off the streets.

“Many come here with the same mentality that I had. No positive role models. No guidance on how to move beyond past mistakes,” he says. “I want God to use me to be the light in a dark place, showing people there is a way out.”

Jeremy’s perspective on Easter has shifted: He knows he’s forgiven and can step into a new life. “For years, one of my biggest problems was not being able to forgive myself for all the wreckage I caused. I now feel a sense of freedom I never knew before.”
