Life Stories: Nick Novello

Why would a young man with so great potential waste his life on something that will destroy himself and others? That is what Nick Novello did for much of his life. Today Seattle CityTeam is preparing to recognize the change and development of Nick’s new life in a service of graduation to be held February 28th.

Nick’s mother and father divorced while Nick was a child. They lived the affluent life of Southern California. Nick did well in school and sports. But something else caught his attention. He found sensual pleasure through girls, surfing and drugs. By 16 years of age, he dropped out of school.

For a period of time, he lived with his mother and began to change his living. It was not long before he was back to girls, surfing and drugs. He cleaned up. He then went to Alaska and entered the drug scene again. He set out for another adventure with some friends on the Trans Alaska Highway to Seattle.

He did jail time on several occasions. During those days he used his time to read the Bible. He was searching. The void that he had in his childhood continued. “The fun life” would not fill the emptiness he felt in his life.

After nearly killing himself in a police chase, he aimlessly wandered into Seattle CityTeam. He did not even know what it was. A volunteer staff person asked if he would do dishes. He agreed. He became a volunteer. He saw the men in the Recovery/Discipleship program. He desired the newness of life they had. One and one-half years ago, at 21 years of age, Nick entered the Recovery/Discipleship program.

On February 28th Nick will receive his graduation certificate. Nick relates some differences in his life. The void is filled with his relation to God. He cares about other people. Before people were there for the purpose of him having fun. Nick is giving time to CityTeam in procuring commodities from businesses. He also is a volunteer with Young Life in helping youth at one of our High Schools.

Nick is not sure where his life will lead. One of the things he is learning now is to trust God.

You are invited to join Nick and the others at his graduation on Saturday, February 28th.
