The vital life-lessons
children learn
at Camp MayMac stay with them for a lifetime. |
As a single mom, Anna worked long hours at minimum
wage to care for her family. There were times
this devoted mom sacrificed her own meals because
she knew her son, Ricky, needed nutritious food for
his growing mind and body. Anna was committed to
raising her son to be strong physically as well as
spiritually, and when she heard about CityTeam’s
Camp MayMac, she knew it was just the opportunity
he needed.
Boys like Ricky — without a dad, home alone
all summer, caring for himself — can feel a
whole range of emotions. Angry at the father who
deserted him. Inferior because of his tattered clothes,
lack of food, and stagnant life. Terrified because
he has to take care of himself when the streets are
filled with danger. It’s no wonder boys like
Ricky seek out the protection of gangs, drug dealers
and build a thick emotional wall around their tender
heart.
“I
just want to say a great big ‘thank you’ to the angel who
made it all possible. You’ve literally saved my son’s life.”
Anna called CityTeam, praying there would be someone
willing to sponsor her son for camp. Fortunately,
there was. She suddenly felt she had an angel on
her side!
At Camp MayMac, Ricky got the chance to experience
a world he never knew before. This street-wise youngster
ran his toes through beach sand for the first time.
He learned to create art and craft projects. Learning
Bible verses and worship songs became his passion,
since they provided the vital guidance he was hungry
for.
“Best of all,” beams Anna, “my
son began to develop a positive attitude — a
tolerance for people of different backgrounds.Without
camp, he never would have had that opportunity.”
This year, Ricky is learning the joy of giving back.
As a junior counselor, this capable, confident teen
is making an impact on young campers.
“By being involved at Camp MayMac, Ricky has
learned so much,” beams Anna.“He’s
no longer judgmental. He not only keeps out of trouble,
but he’s finding his direction in life. He’s
more social,” she adds.
“What’s really important to me is that
his little sister is picking up on big brother’s
attitude. I just want to say a great big ‘thank
you’ to the angel who made it all possible. You’ve
literally saved my son’s life.”
